Sardis and Northern Panola County, Mississippi

Panola County has two county seats. The Northern county seat is Sardis. Both are located along Interstate 55.

Sardis was incorporated in 1866 not long after the construction of a railroad depot north of the Little Tallahatchie River. First called Belmont, it was changed to Sardis when postal officials thought the name was too long.

Sardis takes it’s name from one of the seven churches of the New Testament. The city became a county seat in 1871.
