Prairie County, Arkansas has two county seats. Des Arc was incorporated in 1854 and is one of the oldest river ports in Arkansas. Des Arc took it’s name from Bayou Des Arc which runs nearby. Des Arc is a French term meaning “bow” or “curve.”
During the Civil War, Des Arc was destroyed. Townspeople rebuilt and the city grew. In 1875, Des Arc became the seat of government for Prairie County.
Ten years later another county seat was established at DeValls Bluff. The present courthouse was built in 1913 after the original burned. It was built with a high foundation to protect it from White River flooding.
