August 2019 Upcoming Events



August is full of events form the Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Fest, a new DCC exhibit called Our Front Porch, to the return of the Cabella’s King Kat Tournament.

Thursday, August 1st

The DCC Arts Camp has it’s  Second Annual play at Beth El Heritage Hall in Helena scheduled at 6 p.m. The students will perform a presentation about Southland College.  Come check out this interesting part of Phillips County history. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Saturday, Augst 3rd

The DCC Arts Camp students will travel to Memphis and visit the National Civil Rights Museum.  The group will depart at 8 a.m. and return by 5 p.m.

Sunday, August 11th

Cat Head 17th Anniversary in Clarksdale, MS. 127 Martin Luther King Blvd. Time will be 3:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Come visit with Roger Stolle and celebrate Cat Head’s 17th birthday. Cat Head is a one of kind store featuring folk art and all things blues.

Thursday thru Sunday, August 8th thru 11th

Annual Sunflower River Blues & Gospel Fest in Clarksdale, MS. Live music, food and fun at stages around Clarksdale from Ground Zero to the Main Stage. For all the information, check out their website.  Too many bands and events to list.  This will be a big and great weekend in the Mississippi Delta.

Saturday, August 10th

Cabela’s King Kat Tournament: Time 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Anglers may fish the Mississippi River from the I-55 bridge at Memphis, South to the US – 82 bridge at Greenville.  Location: Helena.  Weigh in will be at the DCC Cherry Street Pavilion. Open to the public.

Sonny Boy Blues Society’s Battle of the Bands / Road to the International Blues Challenge. Time: 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Location will be Southbound Tavern at 233 Cherry Street in Helena, Arkansas.

Tony!Toni!Tone!    Concert at Goldstrike Casino. Tickets range from $24.95 to $54.95

Cameo.    Concert at Horseshoe Casino’s Bluesville. Tickets vary.

Thursday, August 15th

DCC hosts Civil War Roundtable: Civil War in the Delta: Jim Woodrick, Civil War Sites Historian, will be the guest speaker at the DCC Civil War Roundtable discussion on Thursday August 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. The engagement will be held at the Miller Annex, 223 Cherry Street in Helena. Admission is free.

King Biscuit Blues Festival Poster Unveiling at Southern Bancorp located at 425 Plaza West Helena, Arkansas. Time will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Friday, August 16th

Elvis Elvis Elvis: A Tribute to the King.     The Horseshoe Casino presents a tribute to the King live in concert.  Enjoy a night reliving the hits form the Legend and “The King of Rock & Roll with a fantastic tribute to one on the icons of music.  Check on ticket prices.

Saturday, August 17th

The grand opening of the “Our Front Porch” traveling exhibit is set for Saturday, August 17, at the Delta Cultural Center from 1 to 4 p.m. This will be held at the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, Arkansas. Traditional front porch activities and refreshments. Admission is free.

Pickle Fest 2019.     Celebrating the Hollywood Cafe’s 50th Anniversary.  Proceeds will benefit the Tunica Museum.  At the Hollywood Cafe in Robinsonville, MS. 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Arts and Crafts, Scavenger Hunt and Live Music

Friday, August 30th

Gary Owen at Horseshoe Casino’s Bluesville. Hilarious funny man Gary Owen will take the stage at Tunica’s Horseshoe Casino for a night full of laughs. Check for prices.

Saturday, August 31st

8th Annual Legendary Blues Festival is back. Delta Force 3 Radio, based in Helena, is hosting the event at the DCC Cherry Street Pavilion.  Gates open at 2 p.m. and show starts at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the gate.
